President Moon Jae-in of South Korea pledged at the G20 summit in Rome that South Korea will complete the phaseout of coal-fired power generation by 2050. Moon also said that South Korea will help developing nations achieve carbon neutrality by providing funds and technology. He said: “Based on the Republic of Korea’s growth experience, we will join efforts of carbon neutrality by developing nations. In October, South Korea finalised a decision to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent from the 2018 levels by 2030, sharply raising its previous goal. It also confirmed that it will achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and will join a global pact to cut methane emission by 30 per cent by 2030. Moon said G20 nations, which account for about 80 per cent of total carbon emissions, must make more contributions than developing nations to tackle climate change.
