Tarbela hydropower plant to become largest power generation facility in Pakistan

The Tarbela Hydropower Plant will become the largest power generation facility in Pakistan on completion of a fifth extension project, taking its total output to 6298 MW. Officials said that the current installed capacity was 3478 MW, with 1410 MW being added to this is in a fourth extension project, currently underway.

The first unit of the fourth extension project, of 470 MW, has already started generation and the remaining two units will be added “shortly”.

Pakistan’s Executive Committee of National Economic Council has approved the fifth extension project, and the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have partnered to provide $690 million for the project, with the World Bank providing $390 million and the AIIB $300 million. The project will cost $823.5 million. The remainder of the required investment will be provided by Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority.

The project’s Financial Internal Rate of Return has been estimated at 13.5 per cent.
